Visit of Deputy Minister Hanna Trojanowska to Finland

A visit to the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant and talks with the representatives of the Finnish Ministry of Economy and Labour were the main aims of Government’s Plenipotentiary for the Polish Nuclear Energy Hanna Trojanowska’s trip between 20-22 September to Finland.

Deputy Minister Hanna Trojanowska visited the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant where the third (fifth in Finland) reactor is being built. It is of 1650 MW capacity and it is planned to be put into operation in 2012. Under-Secretary of State in the Ministry of Economy also met with representatives of Polish firms that take part in the construction of this block [Poles constitute the biggest group building this facility]. She presented to them the assumptions of the Polish Nuclear Energy Program and encouraged them to use their knowledge and experience for the construction of power plants in Poland.

In addition, Under-Secretary of State in the Ministry of Economy visited the construction site of a deep-depository landfill for spent nuclear fuel in Onkalo. She also became familiar with Finnish activities and plans related to radioactive waste and spent fuel management.

Deputy Minister Trojanowska conducted talks in the Finnish Ministry of Economy and Labour and the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK). During those meetings she became familiar with Finnish experiences and plans for nuclear energy as well as presented Polish plans in this field and discussed possibilities of cooperation.

The meetings were also attended by: Henryk Jacek Jezierski –Chief Geologist of Poland, Under-Secretary of State in the Ministry of Environment, Joanna Hoffman – Polish Ambassador to Finland and Zbigniew Kamieński – Head of Nuclear Power Department in the Ministry of Economy.

At present Finland has four operating reactors in two nuclear power plants in Loviisa and in Olkiluoto, one is under construction and the construction of next 3 reactors is being considered.
